Nutrition Tips For Healthy Moms

Often as parents, we spend more time taking care of our family, friends and loved ones than we do taking care of ourselves. But when it comes to nutrition and self-care, we should actually take care of ourselves FIRST!

An old folk saying goes, “You’ve got to clean up your own backyard first before you can clean up your community.” And the Bible says, “Treat your body like a Temple.” I think what these sayings really mean is that we’ve got to take care of ourselves first and foremost so that we can ensure we’ll be able to take care of those around us (our family, friends, and community).

Just like in an airplane when the flight attendants tell you to put on your air mask before placing the mask on your child, it’s also important to make sure you’re taking care of your own nutrition and well being first and then, once you know you’re safe, you can help your kids too!

As a health coach, I see so many parents make the mistake of focusing only on their kids health and completely ignoring their own. Trust me, the very best thing you can do for your children is to make sure you stay healthy! And there are several huge benefits to taking care of yourself first that you might not even be aware of…

First of all, it’s really hard to get your kids to eat their fruits and veggies if you don’t eat them yourself! If you focus on your own nutrition first, it’ll be a lot easier to get your kids to eat well because they’ll simply be following your lead. If you don’t eat your veggies, how can you expect your kids to?

Secondly, when you take care of yourself first, you’re being a good role model for your children. You are literally showing them that self-care and self-maintenance is important. You don’t want your kids to grow up ignoring their health – but if that’s what you do, chances are they’ll model your health habits and behaviors. This is why obese parents tend to have obese children!

Lastly, when you focus on your own nutrition and health first and foremost, you feel better about yourself. You’re healthy and full of energy and you’re going to be a lot more pleasant to be around. Trust me, your kids will pick up on your energy! The best way to have happy kids is to have happy parents. And the best way to have healthy kids is to have healthy parents. This is what the studies have shown over and over again.

So if you want the best for your kids, make sure you’re giving the best to yourself!
