Essential Home Security Tips

5 Essential Home Security Tips Every Homeowner Should Know

1.  Be careful how you use social media

Social media sites, namely Facebook and Twitter, are some of the greatest innovations of our time.  However, it’s important to be vigilant about what you post on these sites because you never really know who is looking at them.  Consequently, you should avoid posting any details about upcoming vacations or getaways.  Something as harmless as a status update expressing excitement about a trip to the beach could inadvertently serve as an open invitation for an intruder looking for an easy score.

2.  You need a home security system

According to FBI statistics, there is a burglary every 15 seconds in the United States.  Investing in a quality home security system is the best way to help make sure you don’t become a part of these sobering statistics.  There are several creditable home security companies that offer 24/7 home monitoring for a pretty reasonable price.

3.  Perception is reality

When you go on vacation or leave your home for an extended period of time, it’s a good idea to create the illusion that somebody is home.  A burglar is significantly less likely to attempt a break-in at a home were a television or a few lights are on.

4.  Don’t hide spare keys in obvious locations

Burglars are smarter than you think.  They will look in obvious hiding spots, like under doormats and potted plants, in search of spare keys.  For this reason, you shouldn’t hide any keys in these locations.  Instead, choose a more inconspicuous place to hide them, or, even better, give a set to trusted neighbor.

5.  Address structural weaknesses

Since burglars target homes that are easy to break into, you should make a concerted effort to address any structural weaknesses around your property.

Here are a few things you can do:

  • Consider installing security glass on your windows to make them resistant to penetration.
  • Purchase locks equipped with an internal anti-saw pin. This lock variety makes it extremely difficult for burglars to saw through the bolt using a hacksaw.
  • Make sure every entry point is secured with a deadbolt lock.
