Guest Post: Saving Money With Coupon Codes

I like to use coupons and have had readers write in to ask the best way to use coupons to save the most money so I thought I’d share this guest post with you since it goes into detail about the art of using coupon codes – Enjoy!

If you are on this site, you probably are already sold on the idea of saving money.  And why shouldn’t you be?  It doesn’t matter if you have a bank account with six zeros after the number or one that simply totals zero.  There is just no reason to ever spend a penny more on anything than need be.  It’s your money, keep it in your pocket.  Most consumers are familiar with traditional paper coupons.  Coupon codes are a little newer.  So why should you use coupon codes and how?

What is a Coupon Code

Chances are when you shop online and get to the checkout page, you will see a box that says Do You Have a Promotional Code (sometimes it will ask for a coupon code or a discount code – they are all the same thing)?  Don’t just skip the box…ever!  If you enter a valid code from the retailer you will save money.

What Can You Save

There are different types of coupon codes.  Some will save you dollars off – just like traditional coupons.  So you might save anywhere from $1.00 to $100.00 off of an order.  Read the code carefully.  You may be required to spend a certain amount to save.  Do the math before you decide you aren’t spending enough to use the code.  For example, one time I was buying my nephew sneakers.  They $90.  I had to spend $100 to get $25 off.  I added a pair of matching socks for $15.00 to my order.  My total was now $105, but it qualified me for the coupon.  Once the coupon came off, my total was $80.  So, I was spending less than just the cost of the sneakers and getting “free” socks as well.  Some coupons are for a percentage off.  Again, sometimes these come with spending restrictions, but take the time to do the math.  Are they offering 10% off of $25 or more, but 20% off of $50 or more?  You plan on spending $45.  That would come out to $40.50.  Add $5 to your order and you will be spending only $40.00 after the discount.  Sometimes codes offer free shipping if you spend a certain amount or even on all orders.  Some sites will let you enter multiple discount codes and other sites will only allow one per order.

It’s Super Easy To Do
