Robert Gould, the author of the Time Soldiers’ series, recently spoke with me over the phone and sent my son and I the first two books from their “Time Soldiers” series, REX and REX 2. Here’s Bobby looking through Book #1: REX. Check out the front cover, what boy doesn’t like to read about dinosaurs? These books are part of a 6 book series. Books 3 – 6 are called Patch (pirates), Arthur (knights), Mummy (mummies) and Samurai (samurai).
As some of you may know, I have two boys, one who is 12 and the other who is 6. What you also may or may not know about me is that I used to be a teacher. As a Mom and a teacher, one of the things I’ve always tried to do is to instill a love of reading in both boys. Easier said than done. Most moms of boys will probably agree that boys aren’t always naturally inclined to fall in love with reading as quickly as girls do for some reason. Maybe it’s their need to always be on the move that doesn’t allow them to slow down long enough to sit still with a book! I don’t know, but I am always looking for books that will keep their interest and make them want to read more.
If you have boys, you may have noticed how many girl focused books can be found on the local book store shelves compared to the amount of books that are offered for boys. I was so pleased to come across GreatBooksForBoys.com which features “Time Soldiers.” These books were written to appeal to every boy’s sense of action and adventure, while engaging them with fantastic movie-like imagery and writing that’s right on their level.

The Time Soldier series is perfect for Bobby who is almost 7. One thing that really caught my attention is the fact that the character images are of Robert Gould, his family and the actual kids from his neighborhood. The digitally enhanced images bring the story to life as the young time soldiers carry on throughout their adventures. Check out these books at TimeSoldiers.com, and make sure to play the cool videos for your children while you are there. Can you imagine how fun that would be for the kids that were featured in this book? Wouldn’t you love to have a book in circulation that had pictures of you when you were young? This series is great for elementary aged children, it is very easy for them to identify with the six time soldiers who are in 1st, 3rd, 4th and 5th grade.

If you have younger children, Big Guy Books also offers The Big Stuff Series that covers big rigs, tractors, giant earthmovers, monster trucks, racers, rescue vehicles, bugs, sea creatures, and dinosaurs. They also offer a great book for Dads to share with the kids that is called “Father and Son Read-Aloud Stories.” Boys want to be like their dad, so why not read with their dad too. Boys watch their dad and need to know that Dad likes to read too!
