It is finally warming up and the birds are out looking for food!  Making a homemade bird feeder is extremely easy and can be fun and tasty at the same time, that is if you are a peanut butter fan!

In order to make this bird feeder, you will need:

  • A pine cone OR an empty toilet paper tube
  • Peanut butter
  • Birdseed
  • String

Take your empty tube or pine cone and smother it with peanut butter.  Feel free to take a break and eat some of the peanut butter yourself.  Watch yourself, eating too much peanut butter will definitely throw your calorie count up for the day.  I am not one that you will catch eating peanut butter by the spoonful, but my seven year old will never turn down a chance to eat a spoonful of peanut butter!

After the peanut butter is all over your pine cone or tube, roll it in a bowl full of birdseed.  Make sure you can’t see peanut butter anywhere!  This will ensure that you are giving the birds as much birdseed as possible.  After you are done distributing your birdseed, tie your string to your feeder and hang it up outside.  It is great if you are able to hang it up outside your window so that you can watch the birds.  If not, be sure to hang it somewhere that you will be able to enjoy watching the birds as they begin to find their new bird feeder.  Once the birds have finished off that feeder, it will be time to make another one.

This is a great family project, several feeders can be made in one sitting to cut down on the amount of mess that may occur with this project.  My boys love to watch the birds, especially if they are eating from a bird feeder that they made themselves.

What outdoor crafts have you made lately?  Do you have any in mind for the future?
