My Weighted Jump Rope – Perfect Solution For Efficient Workouts

This was sent in by Jennifer from – Enjoy!

Time…it is something that we all wish we had more of. If there was some way to magically get more, please send some my way J

As a busy mom, the one thing that I have trouble with is making time for myself, I am sure many of you can relate. Instead my day revolves around my family…

  • What school activities do I need to go to today?
  • What’s for dinner?
  • Did someone walk the dog?

But, one thing I realized is that I need to take care of myself because if momma isn’t healthy then the whole house suffers!

So, I’ve decided to carve out some time during the day to exercise. Now, when I made this earth shattering decision, I wanted to find some type of exercise or workout that didn’t take up a lot of time, but was very effective.

One thing I know I didn’t want to do was go to the gym and stare at a bunch of big muscle guys sweating and lifting weights or those perfectly fit women in the tight spandex. I would rather workout at home, even outside since the weather is great here in Texas.

A friend of mine said she started jumping rope and it was really helping her lose weight and just feel better overall. At first I laughed, jumping rope is what I did back in grade school, I would probably fall and trip over my own feet!

But, she explained some key benefits and basically sold me on the concept. This is why I am now a HUGE fan of jumping rope to lose weight.

  • A jumping rope is portable which is sooo convenient, and you really can’t make any excuses if you are traveling. It’s lightweight and can fit anywhere, even your purse!
  • Believe it or not, jumping rope is a full body workout. The key is to get a weighted jump rope. These jump ropes have weights in the handle, so you’re not only working out your lower body, but also your upper body.
  • It’s cheap! I don’t like spending a lot of money, especially on some expensive exercise equipment like a treadmill – those cost WAY too much. Personally I like the under $20 price tag of a jump rope
  • You can burn a TON of calories in a short amount of time – this is my favorite benefit!

So, I started on my jumping rope to lose weight journey and it’s been almost 2 weeks now, and I am actually sticking with it! (Not sure if you are like me, but I tend to start stuff then don’t stick with it).

When I started jumping rope with my amazing weighted jump rope, I could only jump for like 3 minutes – I know pretty pathetic and I would be totally out of breath and practically falling to the floor. But after keeping up with it for a week, I now follow a jump rope workout that burns 135 calories in only 10 minutes. I combine that with some other simple exercises and do a few sets and I have a great workout for the day!

Here are some tips when you are jumping rope

  • Jump only 1-2 inches off the floor, give the rope just enough space to slip under your feet
  • Keep your elbows close to your sides, the movement should come from your wrists and forearms, not your shoulders
  • Make sure the rope is the correct length, it should come up to your armpits.

I’ve also found that jumping rope is something you can do as a family. My daughter Haley is an awesome volleyball player and they actually jump rope in their daily workouts. So, now I challenge her every once in a while – her favorite game is called “Hot Pepper” – I have to admit she usually wins, but not for long!

Here is the game if you want to give it a try. It’s a rhyme, so sing it while you are jumping.

  • Red Hot Pepper in the pot. Gotta get over what the leaders got. 10, 20, 30, 40 (speed up the rope until the jumper misses) Keep track of who has what score and see who has the highest count.

Jumping rope has so many benefits and I highly recommend you start adding jumping rope into your daily activities. It’s cheap to buy one, its portable, burns lots of calories fast, full body workout and even a great family friendly activity to do with the kids.

So when you decide you want to start jumping rope, my BIGGEST tip is to get a weighted jump rope – not only does it help for your full body workout but it also helps improve your speed and agility – which is great for moms – never know when your new found skills will come in handy J
