Finding the Best Options For Your Teen’s First Car

rodeo1

Are you considering purchasing a car for your teenager? There are a lot of options out there, and you need to weigh the pros and cons of each.   While the car above would definitely catch the attention of a teenage girl, it is not necessarily the best choice for a teen’s first car.  We bought a sporty car thinking we’d pass it on to our son when he turned 16, but after driving it for awhile, we realized it had way too much speed and could easily slip out of control while being driven by a new driver.

When you’re looking at cars for your child, make sure you take a look at all the information available.  Keep the following six choices in mind as you start your car search.

New or Used

One of the first things you need to decide is whether you’re going to purchase a new car or a used one.  This will make a big difference in what you look at, and the specs that you ultimately decide are most important.

In general, a new car is going to last longer than a used vehicle; however, because of this, the car is also going to be more expensive.  If you’re looking for the most affordable option, a used car is likely your best bet.  On the other hand, if you want your child to have the best, most current features, getting a new car is the better option.

Safety Ratings

Let’s be honest, kids aren’t always the safest drivers.  Because this is your child’s first car, one of the most important things you can look at is the safety ratings of the vehicle.  The safer the car is, the less likely your child is to get injured in an accident. If they do get injured, then having an injury lawyer readily available will help ensure they get the relevant legal support and possible compensation. Make sure to check out all safety features on the car, as well as the vehicle’s crash test rating.  You can find government ratings online to help you make the right decision.

Vehicle Size

Are you getting a car for your child, or simply a new vehicle that the teenager will be allowed to drive?  In many families, this makes a difference in the size of the car you’ll consider.  A large van isn’t a great option for a teen who will be the only person driving the car, and usually the only person riding in it.  However, if your child will be transporting other children, or if you plan to drive it regularly yourself, you’re going to want to consider a larger vehicle.

It’s also important to remember that the size of a vehicle will affect other aspects of the car as well.  Safety ratings, gas mileage, and more are all affected by how large or small the vehicle is.

Gas Mileage

Are you going to be paying for gas, or is your child fully in charge of this?  Either way, it’s likely that you want to get the most economical car possible.  Gas is expensive, so getting a car with great gas mileage will help you and your child save money in the long run.  When you’re considering vehicles, make sure to compare the gas mileage and keep in mind how much city vs. highway driving your child will be doing.

Technology

New cars offer a lot of new technology.  Some of this is extremely beneficial, including technology that improves the safety of the vehicle; however, some of it is also distracting.  You need to find the right balance of vehicle technology that helps your child but isn’t distracting.

For example, you may want to consider parking assist, because this helps your child stay safe when they are parking.  Bluetooth integration is something that is great for some, but detrimental to others.  Decide whether this is something that you feel your child needs in their new car.

Price

When you’re getting a new car of any type, you need to look at the price.  Cars aren’t always cheap, and you need to get something that you can afford.  Whether you or your child is paying for the car will affect the price point you consider.  On top of this, you need to decide whether you want to purchase the car outright or get a loan.

Getting a new car for a teenager is an important process.  With the right information on hand, and understanding what you are looking for, you can find the perfect car for your child.  Good luck on your hunt for the perfect vehicle for your teen!
