Six Minute Mile – Basketball Team Requirements

Travis is now a freshman in high school and has been working so hard in order to make it on the school basketball team since seventh grade.  This year he made it on the basketball team and practices with his team five days a week.  This week the coach told the basketball team that everyone had to run the mile in under six minutes in order to play.  Everyone that didn’t make this time would continue to run the mile each day until they made it under six minutes or they would not be able to play with the team.

Once we heard this, we took Travis to the track to get his time and talk to him about how to pace himself while he ran.  My husband told him how he was doing on each lap and coached him on his speed.  At the end of our test run, Travis had made his mile in five minutes and forty seconds! This was awesome, he was able to run the mile in under six minutes on his first time out.

Today was the day that the coaches would time the basketball team on the track.  It rained all morning so the team thought that their run would be postponed, but the rain stopped and the coaches took them out to the track.  Travis really wanted to make his time on his first try and was ready to give it 110% today.  He made it on his first try!  He was able to run the mile today in five minutes and twenty-nine seconds which was better than his first time.  I am SO proud of him, he has definitely come a long way since he started his basketball training.

Is your child on a sports team?  Are they competitive?  Do they take place in sports training outside of their team practices?

  1. Big congrats to him on making his time!! I’m sure his adrenaline was pumping! I love watching the teens meet and exceed goals, they get every bit as excited as the little ones, they just show it in different ways. 🙂
