Things I Learned As A First Time Mom by Jessica

Things I had to learn about as a first time mom – written by Jessica

I just had a baby 7 weeks ago, and my whole life has drastically changed.  Nothing and no one can prepare you for what you are about to experience and do as a new mother.  I read books and talked to other parents, went to meetings about being a mom, etc., but once I brought my baby into the world, all of that information left my memory and I had to start from scratch.

The first big lesson I had to learn was that good sleep is a thing of the past.  Now, notice I said good sleep.  People are very serious when they tell you to sleep when the baby sleeps.  It’s hard to sleep when they are sleeping because you have so much you can get done that you cannot do while they are awake, such as laundry or cleaning the house.  However, those things can wait! You need sleep in order to properly take care of yourself and your baby.

The next lesson I had to learn was that babies will cry no matter what.  They will cry because they are tired, because they are hungry, because they have a dirty diaper or they will cry for no reason other than to just cry.   It’s easy to get upset and feel like you can’t make them happy because they are constantly crying, but that is not the case.  We must remember that babies only have one form of communication, and that is to cry.  They cannot tell us exactly what is wrong; we have to figure it out by process of elimination.  If your baby is constantly crying, don’t stress!  It’s normal, and it’s okay.

One more thing I had to learn as a new mom is that you will change close to 70 diapers a week, so buy in bulk.  My son is an eating machine, so he has wet and dirty diapers constantly.  We go through diapers so quickly, and that can get expensive.  Every baby is different and they all react to different brands in different ways.  The whole time I was pregnant, I was told to stick to name brand diapers because store-brand were not good enough and wouldn’t absorb everything.  However, I buy Walmart brand because I prefer them to the name brand ones! They are just as good, and about $5 cheaper a pack!

As a new mom, we must learn so many things and it can get stressful and overwhelming.  I am still catching up on lost sleep from my last trimester of my pregnancy.  It’s okay to feel like you can’t do it all, because you simply can’t!  The laundry will be there when you wake up, and the messy house won’t go anywhere either but you must sleep in order to have any energy to complete those tasks later on.  Something I tell myself often is, “ You are not a bad mom.  You are a good mom having a bad day.  Breathe.”
