#Recipe: Make A Healthy Salad

I like to compare salad to a blank canvas.  The possibilities are (pretty much) endless.  Salads can be made up of whatever you want to put in them, but making a healthy salad can be tough if you do not know what makes up a healthy one.

Let’s start at the bottom of the bowl and work our way up:

  • Start out by mixing red and green lettuces:  A blend of lettuces may protect best against free radicals.
  • DIY Salad dressing:  Mixing olive oil and vinegar is the easiest way to avoid sugar and chemical emulsifiers.
  • Add sliced hard-boiled eggs:  The yolks’ fat helps you absorb up to 9 times more carotenoid antioxidants.  I love hard-boiled eggs!  I could eat them alone pretty often.
  • Do not fear the cheese!  It may boost fat loss when eaten with nonstarchy veggies.
  • Go nuts!  Fiber, fat and protein give your salad more staying power.
  • Lastly, pick pomegranate.  Ditch raisins for ¼ cup of pomegranate seeds to save 18 grams of sugar.  WOW!  I had no idea raisins added that much sugar to a salad!

This is the recipe for the perfect healthy salad.  I have a friend who hated salad until she got pregnant.  Now she only eats Caesar salad.  She’s still picky when it comes to her salad.  I need to try and convince her to eat a salad like this!

What is your favorite type of salad?  Do you have a special salad recipe you created yourself?  How about a family favorite?  Do you add any “strange” ingredients that others normally would not add to theirs?  Make sure you let us know in the comments section below.  I would love to make a new salad for my family to try!  Don’t forget to include a picture if you have one.
