Benefits Of NOT Using A Microwave

Here in America, we are all about convenience and the “I must have it now” mindset. It is okay to be that way! It is completely normal. That is what makes microwaves so popular. You can heat up a meal in 3 minutes compared to cooking it in the oven for 40 minutes. However, we all know that there are some health hazards with microwaves. The radiation that gets put into food from microwaves is just scary! But, sometimes I am just willing to risk that for a bowl of soup to be ready in two minutes!

There are tons of benefits to not using a microwave, in case you were interested. One great benefit is that food is evenly cooked in the oven or on the stove top as opposed to uneven heating in the microwave. I hate when I am heating up some lasagna and half of it is still cold. When you re-heat it in the oven, everything is heated evenly. That also prevents the already-hot spots from becoming hard, chewy or burned when trying to heat up the cold part.

Pizza tastes SO MUCH better heated up in the oven or on the stove than in the microwave. It is crispy and tastes fresh as opposed to being flimsy and tasting plastic-y. Please keep in mind these are all personal opinions – everyone has different experiences!

Another benefit to not using the microwave is that I can make popcorn in a popcorn popper – popcorn is much healthier this way! I have a friend who found her popcorn popper at the local Goodwill for $4. She went to the dollar store and bought some popcorn kernels (which will last months even with regular popping happening) and made a nice hot and healthy snack of popcorn (lightly salted). Does your family avoid the microwave? What are some benefits that you have noticed?
