Starting a business is often seen as a dream for many people. But, it comes with quite a few challenges and can often be risky. And, there’s no guarantee of success. It’s far from the only way to become a business owner, though, and you could have more than a few options ahead of you.

These could be more appealing for multiple reasons. They could need less of an upfront investment, offer a greater degree of safety, and more. But, they’ll also come with their negatives. Despite that, some of them could still be worth considering if you want to be a business owner.

Three of these are the more common options, and they could offer more than a few benefits.

Open a Franchise

Franchising is often seen as one of the safer ways to get into business for more than a few reasons. You’ll be operating under an already relatively well-known brand, and you’ll get a decent bit of support from the corporate business from the start. This could be vital for first-time business owners or those without a lot of entrepreneurial experience.

This can be a great way to kickstart your business while still giving you a bit of a safety net. But, this also comes with its challenges. Opening a franchise can still be relatively expensive, and your operations could be relatively restricted by your franchising agreement with the corporate brand.

Buy an Existing Business

One of the biggest risks of starting a business is there’s no guarantee it’ll actually be successful. It’s a noticeable gamble. But, buying a business negates a lot of that risk. Companies for sale will have proof of concept, a history of sales, and should already be making money.

Focusing on these instead of starting from scratch can always be worth considering. It gives you more peace of mind that there’s a solid foundation to grow from. Starting off with an SMB marketplace is a great way to start finding suitable options. After that, it’s just a matter of doing your due diligence and narrowing them down.

Look into Licensing

Licensing often gets a little confused with franchising since there are a few apparent similarities. But, they’re noticeably different. Licensing involves obtaining the rights to sell a particular product or service. It doesn’t exactly let you operate under this brand or get the same support you’ll get under a franchise.

Instead, you’ll still have to look after everything else yourself. But, this gives you a lot of control going forward. You’ll already have a relatively proven product or service to sell, so it’s  just a matter of basing your efforts around that. If you want to take an independent approach while still having a solid offering, this could be a great approach to take.

Starting a company isn’t the only way to become a business owner, and you’ll have more options than you would’ve thought. Each offers its pros and cons, making it more than worth weighing each before making your decision.
